What Happened – The Hobbit Chapter 5
Bilbo Baggins wakes up alone in a dark cave. He does not know how he got there. He starts to feel around in the darkness. While crawling, he finds a small ring on the ground and puts it in his pocket. Bilbo continues to move through the cave. He eventually comes across a lake.
Near the lake, he meets a creature named Gollum. Gollum is curious about Bilbo and suggests a game of riddles. They agree that if Bilbo wins, Gollum will show him the way out. If Gollum wins, he can eat Bilbo. They take turns asking each other riddles. Bilbo struggles but manages to answer Gollum’s riddles.
Finally, Gollum cannot solve Bilbo’s last riddle, which was actually a question about what was in his pocket. Gollum becomes suspicious and angry. He realizes that Bilbo has the ring, which is Gollum’s lost treasure. Gollum becomes upset and dangerous.
Bilbo puts the ring on his finger and discovers that it makes him invisible. Gollum cannot see him now. Bilbo uses this to his advantage and follows Gollum. Gollum leads him towards the exit of the cave. Bilbo manages to slip past Gollum and escape. He finds his way out of the cave into the sunlight.
