What Happened – The Hobbit Chapter 9
The dwarves and Bilbo are captured by elves in the forest. They are taken to the Elvenking’s halls. The elves lock the dwarves in separate cells. Bilbo uses his magic ring to stay invisible. He sneaks around and listens to the elves. He learns that the elves are not planning to release the dwarves soon.
Bilbo finds a way to help his friends escape. He discovers the elves use barrels to send goods down the river. He makes a plan to hide the dwarves in these barrels. Bilbo waits for the right moment. The elves have a feast, and the guards drink too much. They fall asleep.
Bilbo steals the keys from a guard. He unlocks the cells one by one. The dwarves are surprised but follow his plan. They climb into the empty barrels. Bilbo closes the lids and waits for the elves to send the barrels down the river.
When the elves send the barrels, Bilbo jumps onto one of them. He clings to the outside and rides down the river. The barrels float to Lake-town, also known as Esgaroth. Bilbo and the dwarves arrive safely, though they are wet and tired. They are free from the elves and ready to continue their journey.
