What Happened – Into The Wild Chapter 3
In Chapter 3 of Into the Wild, Chris McCandless arrives in Carthage, South Dakota. He meets Wayne Westerberg, a local grain elevator operator. Chris becomes friends with Wayne and starts working for him. He helps out at the grain elevator and does other odd jobs. Chris enjoys working and living in Carthage. He stays with Wayne for a while and gets along well with Wayne’s crew.
Wayne finds Chris to be a hard worker. Chris is also very intelligent and shares his ideas about society and life. He talks about wanting to live simply and travel. Chris does not tell Wayne much about his past or his family.
While in Carthage, Chris uses the name Alex. He does not want people to know his real name. He is determined to keep his past a secret. Chris saves up money from his work. He plans to continue his journey into the wilderness.
Eventually, Wayne gets into trouble with the law. He is arrested for selling illegal cable boxes. Chris decides to leave Carthage after Wayne’s arrest. He says goodbye to Wayne and the people he met there. Chris is ready to move on and continue his travels.
Before leaving, Chris gives Wayne a copy of War and Peace. He writes a note inside the book. Chris then leaves Carthage to continue his adventure.
