What Happened – Merchant Of Venice Act 2 Scene 5
Shylock tells his daughter Jessica that he is going out for dinner. He instructs her to lock up the house and not to look out the windows. Shylock seems worried about the party that is happening nearby. He doesn’t want Jessica to be influenced by the festivities.
Lancelot, who used to work for Shylock, arrives. He is now working for Bassanio. Lancelot tells Jessica that there will be a masquerade party that night. Shylock is suspicious of Lancelot’s intentions but allows him to deliver a message to Jessica.
Shylock warns Jessica not to misbehave while he is away. He tells her to ignore the music and noise from the streets. Shylock leaves for the dinner party, not knowing that Jessica plans to run away with Lorenzo, a friend of Bassanio.
After Shylock leaves, Jessica is left alone. She knows that Lancelot is helping her to escape. She plans to disguise herself as a boy to join Lorenzo and the others.
