What Happened – Night Chapter 1
In Chapter 1 of Night, Elie Wiesel introduces his hometown, Sighet, in Transylvania. Elie is a teenager who is deeply religious. He spends much time studying Jewish texts. Moshe the Beadle is a poor man who helps Elie with his studies.

In spring 1944, German soldiers come to Sighet. Jews are forced to live in ghettos. There are two ghettos in Sighet, and Elie’s family lives in the larger one. Life becomes difficult, but people try to stay hopeful. They believe the war will end soon.
Soon, the Nazis start deporting Jews from the ghettos. Elie’s family is among the last to leave. They are packed into cattle cars on a train. The train is headed to Auschwitz, a concentration camp. Before leaving, Elie’s family must leave their home and belongings behind. They are only allowed to take a few personal items.
