What Happened – The Phantom Tollbooth Chapter 10
Milo, Tock, and the Humbug travel to the city of Digitopolis. They meet the Mathemagician, who rules the city. The Mathemagician shows them around. He explains how numbers are mined from the ground like jewels. They visit the number mine and see numbers being dug up and polished. The Mathemagician gives Milo a magic pencil.
Later, they sit down to eat. The meal consists of subtraction stew, which makes them hungrier the more they eat. The Mathemagician then shows them an enormous number line. He explains how numbers can go on forever. Milo asks about infinity, and they talk about how it is impossible to reach it.
Milo wants to bring Rhyme and Reason back to the kingdom. The Mathemagician is not interested in helping. He thinks things are fine without them. Milo uses the magic pencil to draw a line on the ground. He tricks the Mathemagician into stepping over it. Milo claims the Mathemagician agreed to help them by crossing the line. The Mathemagician is surprised but agrees to help. He gives Milo a small gift, a magic staff, to aid in their journey.
Milo, Tock, and the Humbug leave Digitopolis. They continue on their quest to find Rhyme and Reason. They hope to bring balance back to the Kingdom of Wisdom.
