What Happened – The Phantom Tollbooth Chapter 11
In Chapter 11 of The Phantom Tollbooth, Milo, Tock, and the Humbug continue their journey. They arrive at a place called the Valley of Sound. The valley is silent because all the sounds are missing. They meet a person called the Soundkeeper. She explains that she keeps all the sounds in her fortress. Milo wants to help bring back the sounds to the valley.
To do this, Milo and his friends visit the fortress. Inside, they see many different sounds stored in jars and boxes. The Soundkeeper shows them around and explains how sounds are collected and preserved. Milo asks if he can take a sound with him. The Soundkeeper agrees and gives him a small sound to carry.
Milo and his friends leave the fortress and return to the valley. They meet a group of people who live there. These people are unhappy because they cannot hear anything. Milo decides to release the sound he brought from the fortress. When he does, the sound grows louder and louder. It eventually breaks the silence in the valley.
With the sounds restored, the people of the valley are happy again. The Soundkeeper realizes that sounds should be shared, not kept locked away. She agrees to let the sounds be free. Milo, Tock, and the Humbug continue on their journey, leaving the Valley of Sound behind.
