What Happened – The Phantom Tollbooth Chapter 3
Milo drives his car into Dictionopolis. The city is full of words and letters. At the entrance, he meets a man named the Gateman. The Gateman asks Milo for a reason to enter. Milo is unsure and says he is just passing through. The Gateman lets him in anyway.
Inside, Milo meets King Azaz’s five advisors. Each advisor repeats what the others say but in different words. They welcome Milo to the city. Milo learns that Dictionopolis is a place where all words are grown.
Milo then visits the Word Market. There, people buy and sell words and letters. Vendors shout out different words for sale. Some words are long and complicated, while others are short and simple.
Milo meets a character named Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee boasts about his spelling skills. Milo also meets another character named Humbug. The Humbug and the Spelling Bee argue about who is better.
During their argument, they knock over a stall. Letters and words scatter everywhere. The market becomes chaotic. Milo tries to stay out of the mess.
A policeman named Officer Shrift arrives. He is very short and round. Officer Shrift blames Milo for the chaos. He accuses Milo of several crimes. Without a trial, Officer Shrift sentences Milo to prison.
